Industry Workshop on “Next-gen energy-efficient FD-SOI systems” | 3 May 2024 (NUS, Singapore)

From Prof. Massimo Alioto and the whole FD-fAbrICS team, our warmest thanks go to the speakers and the attendees of the workshop at NUS in Singapore on “Next-gen energy-efficient FD-SOI systems”, held on May 3rd, 2024.

The speaker line-up included industry leaders and world-renowned professors sharing a bright vision of the future of semiconductors and FD-SOI:
– Rene Jonker (SOITEC SVP & GM)
– Rocco Tam (NXP Fellow)
– Brian Chen (Senior Director, GlobalFoundries)
– Massimo Alioto (NUS)
– Heng Chun Huat (NUS)
– Trevor Carlson (NUS)
– Li Haizhou (NUS)

PEAK MOMENTS OF THE WORKSHOP
The first talk session focused on advances in FD-SOI systems from connectivity to systems and applications, as well as trends and opportunities. Full-stack innovation from circuits to architectures and models for connected edge AI have been the focal point of the second session.

The subsequent demo session allowed to exemplify the concepts expressed during the talks with real-world silicon systems and AI models to gain a more direct experience of the benefits brought by the underlying lines of research. As application driver, a 100-keyword spotting AI system was demonstrated to bridge the semantic-power gap between today’s few-keyword spotting and power-hungry speech recognition. The proposed system is able to take complex and structured commands for next-generation human-machine interfaces, while taking 100X less power than traditional speech recognition.

The networking lunch was a pleasant experience, connecting experts and innovators into follow-up discussion about what to build next. We call them “enablers”, and we believe that their role cuts across industry and academia with no real distinction. Very much in the way we explore new jungles with pathfinders and cooperate to explore uncharted areas.

Overall, we trust the workshop and the diffusion of the FD-fAbrICS project deliverables will create new innovation opportunities in our semiconductor industry in Singapore with global outreach.

Our special thanks go also to IAF, A*STAR, SOITEC, NXP and National University of Singapore, which supported the “FD-fAbrICS: Joint Lab for FD-SOI Always-on Intelligent & Connected Systems” program (Award I2001E0053).
